Course Description

• During this beginner-level course, students will be exposed to an orthography used in Kouri-Vini. They will learn vocabulary associated with various themes, practice common expressions and everyday phrases that are essential for daily interactions. Students will develop the ability to introduce themselves and others, ask and answer basic questions, and engage in simple conversations with growing confidence. The course provides a strong foundation in both spoken and written Kouri-Vini through a clear, communicative approach that emphasizes practical language use in real-life situations.

• The intermediate-level course builds upon the foundation established in Kouri-Vini 101, with a continued expansion of language skills and cultural knowledge.  Students will develop vocabulary across a variety of thematic areas and strengthen their use of common expressions and everyday phrases essential for daily interactions.

In addition, students will explore examples of Louisiana literature through stories, songs, and poems.  Engagement with these cultural texts will further enhance their speaking abilities, listening comprehension, and overall understanding of the language.

Herbert J. Wiltz is a retired language teacher holding Master’s degrees in Education, French and Spanish. He served in both the parochial and the public school systems, dedicating his career to language instruction and

cultural enrichment. Throughout his years as an educator, he developed and taught numerous lessons in Creole (Kouri Vini), contributing significantly to the preservation, promotion, and continued vitality of the language.

The course is $160 for AF members, and $195 for non-members (membership will be included with purchase) for 8 courses of 1 hour. Online only.
