As part of Black History Month, join us for a free screening of No Chains, No Masters (Ni chaînes ni maîtres, 2024), followed by a discussion and Q&A with Franco-Beninese director Simon Moutaïrou.
Set in the 18th-century French colony of Isle de France (present-day Mauritius), the film explores slavery in the Indian Ocean, focusing on resistance, freedom, and marronage. A rarely told chapter of French history.
The story follows Massamba and his daughter Mati, enslaved on Eugène Larcenet’s plantation, as they attempt to escape from slavery, facing violence, pursuit, and impossible choices in their fight for freedom.
Recommended for audiences 16+ in some countries(Some scenes may be disturbing due to themes of slavery and violence.)
